A Canadian politician is openly spreading Nazi propaganda

Do you ever see something that is absolutely horrifying, the implications of which are terrible, and no one else seems to really notice? These two tweets are one of those things for me:

Anyone with a basic understanding of politics is aware that Nazism is separated as a unique political ideology, within the broader category of fascism, and is a far-right totalitarian ideology. So Poilievre's claims are quite obviously simply ignorant, but surely I am going too far in calling his claims Nazi propaganda! However, looking at who created the name "National Socialist German Workers' Party", and why, paints a much more disturbing picture of the plans involved and helps us understand how terrifying it is to see people continuing to fall for Hitler's strategy.

I have neither the time nor the expertise to outline all the complexities of what was happening in Germany in the Interwar Period but a few key points/moments:

  • The German Workers' Party (DAP) is formed shortly after WWI (1919) as a nationalist, pan-German party arising partly from the belief that the German army didn't really lose the war but were stabbed-in-the-back by socialist and Jewish members of parliament who conceded in signing the Armistice.
  • Hitler became involved with the DAP as an enlisted member of the army, assigned to keep an eye on it, but quickly became involved in debates at party meetings and was both liked and enjoyed his participation.
  • Hitler officially joins as the 55th member at the turn of 1920 and quickly becomes their primary speaker.
  • While his involvement helps the party grow quickly to 2,000+ members, Hitler notes that anti-capitalist, pro-worker sentiment is far more popular than simple nationalism at this time in Germany.
  • On February 24, 1920, Hitler leads the change of the party name from DAP to National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) to appeal to the large pro-worker movement, and also to confuse and draw members from the active "German National Socialist Workers' Party".
  • The NSDAP (Nazi Party) continues as an antisemitic, anti-monarchist, anti-communist party, focused in part on the concept of racial purity, and only anti-capitalist in how they tie it with Jewish people and antisemitism, being very pro-capitalist in supporting free reign of corporations owned by themselves and their friends.
  • While Hitler continues to use "both sides" language in his speeches, drawing both on hyper-nationalism and on injustices against the working class, in 1933 the Nazi paramilitary group SA (Sturmabteilung), known commonly as "brownshirts", focus on assaulting and then arresting communists, socialists, and social democrats, often but not exclusively those who are Jewish. These prisoners become the first in concentration camps (Dachau), which were started as political camps rather than death camps.
  • As the Nazis obtain totalitarian control and political suppression becomes inclusive of the absolute Holocaust, targets of death camps continue to include left-wing politicians and left-wing activists (socialists, communists, anyone speaking against nationalism, etc.) in addition to Jewish people, prisoners of war, Romani peoples, people experiencing homelessness, 2SLGBTQ+ people, people with physical and intellectual disabilities, and any others deemed "anti-socials".

Therefore, it is crucial to note that Hitler chose a party name of national socialists to deceive the general public, in particular the working class, to grow the base and strength of the Nazi Party. This was an intentional lie, deliberate propaganda, to hide their solely far-right, hyper-nationalist, fascist agenda to seize complete power and actually enrich themselves and their wealthy, property- and business-owning friends. Socialism was not the goal, not the process, and not the reality. "Socialist" was propaganda and every historian ever since has clearly explained this.

Therefore, suggesting that the Nazis were socialists was Nazi propaganda created directly by Hitler. Spreading this lie is spreading Hitler's propaganda 80 years after his death.

Having the leader of Canada's official opposition party spreading this propaganda is deeply horrifying the more you understand where it came from and what it led to. This should be front-page news and should be soundly debunked and rejected not just by the Canadian public, but by objective news agencies who can report historical realities without being "biased". I fear that it is lack of education and understanding that lets this evil go unchecked.
